romney can give all of these voters an excuse to vote for him, right? >> yeah, we talked about this yesterday on the show. if he can go in -- that's why i worry about all this talk about zingers, just stylistically. don't be someone you're not. don't come in with canned jokes. be who you are, which is the line he delivered, i thought, well in his convention speech where he said, i can't heal the earth. i'm not going to part the seas, whatever he said. i just want to help you and your family. i'm not fancy, i'm not exciting. i want this job because i can do a better job healing the economy, not the earth, healing the economy than he has done for the last 3 1/2 years. if he can do that, be confident, don't try to be slick or funny, it's not who you are, just be mitt romney, he'll have a good night. >> i think he'll have a good night. i'll tell you this also, mark mckinnon. we're going to hear about the 47% from barack obama tonight. he'll bring that up. i also think mitt romney will bring this up in the debate. something that was spoken yesterday in charlotte, north carolina, by

of. all of a sudden the guy is in worse shape. that's why they won't do it, right? romney won't tell us what he's getting rid of it because if he's getting rid of it, he's killing charitable organizations that need the money from charity. you start capping that, start messing around with people's mortgages, the one thing they need to build up some capital and personal worth. you mess with state and local. are you supposed to move if you live in new york or a high tax state like massachusetts, you're supposed to move because romney got elected? >> listen, his tax cut plan is going to slam about 68% of the american people, not 47% of the american people. he can't provide real details. you could close every single loophole that benefits the wealthy and just close it for the wealthy and it wouldn't pay for a fraction of the tax cut he's giving the wealthy. >> because they're still getting ahead. >> reducing capital gains to zero which means romney would pay virtually zero taxes. he's going to come back and say i want to work this out with the congress. well, i just don't think the countr

if karl rove doesn't like how mitt romney does tomorrow night, he could give a lot of that $60 million, the biggest chunk of change, to, i don't know, senate candidates, congressional candidates, and not romney. >> that's right, erin. there are a lot of republicans and democrats who are very closely watching what these outside groups -- and it's not just the super pacs we have the money for and the finances. but also these 5014 c nonprofit groups raising a ton more money, the karl rove gps, the koch brothers, americans for prosperity. and there is a feeling that if mitt romney starts to look like he can't win, that they will pull the plug on him, and start diverting the money that they otherwise would have spent on his campaign, on congressional campaigns, and that really underscores the difference between these sort of post citizens united elections where the power and the determination of viability is really being made by these outside groups versus before where you had the parties being able to decide, hey, we think this candidate has a chance. and in 1996, for instance, we saw the

. >>> right now on "andrea mitchell reports" countdown to denver. president obama and mitt romney prepare for their first debate. both sides trying to lower expectations. >> governor romney, he's a good debater. i'm just okay. >> president obama is a very -- he's a very gifted speaker. the man's been on the national stage for many years. he's an experienced debater. he's done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> flashpoint libya, the white house on the defensive after reports of both security and intelligence nurse in benghazi before that terror attack. >> standing up, sitting down. >> which ever one you like. >> there you go. >> do whatever they tell us. >> the white house line is you heard the president say, osama bin laden is dead, al qaeda is done, everything is fine in the middle east. this, obviously, contradicts -- ther series of events contradicts that campaign slogan. so, the fact is, that this was clearly an act of terror committed by people who were pretty well trained jihadists. >> more carnage in afghanistan. the taliban

of the ball to the delivery of the plate. mitt romney's got to find precisely the right arm slot. aggression with the right amount of respect for a popular president. he's got to figure out a way to flush out his agenda without getting to the unpopular parts he's been avoiding talking about like what are the tax breaks he's going to take to get the rates down. he's got to be on offense but not too much. it's hard. everything went right for george bush in 2000. gore was bad, he had orange make-up. he got in bush's face, that didn't go very well. bush overperformed, no foreign policy experience, he did very well. and the bush team outspun the gore people because they pushed their story line. and you went from, you know, minus five before the debate to plus a couple afterward and went on to win that disputed victory. but yes, romney can do it, he was a smart guy, good in most of the debates for the republicans. on the other hand, obama's pretty smart too and there's not much expectation to think he's going to screw up. >> what about, john, playing to that dull incompetent thing? he said in his
